Problem solving: an effective technique for persistent family issues
Reading time 1'
In living with children, problems always arise that need to be resolved. Some problems are solved on the spot, while others persist and require a lot of negotiation.
Considering the fact that you often get into a power struggle with your children, a technique that can help you and everyone to feel equal at home is problem solving.
How is it done?
You take a piece of paper and the whole family sits at the table. You write down the problem to be solved and everyone suggests a solution. Be careful! Every solution is acceptable and is recorded. Even the impossible ones, the craziest ones. In the end, and when you have completed the process, you start to reject some options, always in consultation with the others. In the end, you arrive at a solution and everyone signs the paper. The decision goes into effect immediately.
What if the solution doesn't work?
If the solution ultimately doesn’t work, you call a family council again and renegotiate other possible solutions.
Example
Problem: We take too long to get ready for school.
Solutions:
1. Wake up earlier.
2. Don’t go to school again.
3. Have everything ready the night before.
4. Go to school later.
5. Wash up faster.
6. Go to school in your pajamas.
Popular solution: 3. Have everything ready the night before
It’s a very fun process for children, who are naturally very inventive! And because they participate in the solution-finding process as equal members, they are more willing to cooperate!
Good luck!!!
